More Research and Experimentation

Today was another chance to continue to research, install, and experiment with Word Press plug-ins. Because there are so many, it’s difficult to pick and choose. So far I’ve installed and/or activated the following plug-ins, though several still require some tweaking:

**Indicates a plug-in that I’m especially pleased with.

In order to get some of these working I had to setup accounts at www.gmail.com, www.wordpress.com, and www.google.com/analytics/ which was a little time consuming but worthwhile. There is so much to know that setting a time limit for each learning exercise has become important.

Gatorize was another plug-in that seemed worth trying, but I wasn’t able to quickly figure out how to customize its placement. In fact, it was getting in the way of displaying the post headings the way I wanted. Perhaps I’ll revisit that one later on.

  • A few questions from a blog idiot

How do you keep the spammers from eating you alive? i\’ve seen blogs with nothing but spam postings.

How do you keep some left wing extremist from posting racist or defamatory rhetoric? and if you cant stop them, what are you legally liabel when they do?

can viruses be posted to blogs?

  • Fundraiser,

I’m going to guess that you mean “spam comments” when you say “spam postings”, and that’s a great question. WordPress (which is the blogging software that I use) has a built-in anti-comment spam feature called Akismet which has worked quite well for me. There are other options available to depending on your needs.

Regarding the types of comments that people leave, as the owner of the blog, you have the ability to delete comments or edit them. Other options include turning comments off so people can’t leave messages on your blog or configuring your blog software to require your approval before comments show up. One other method I’ve seen is only allowing people with accounts to post comments which also gives you control over who posts what.

I’m honestly not sure about liability for others’ comments, though you could purchase an umbrella insurance policy to cover yourself in case some particularly vindictive person decided to target you.

Your viruses question is a little more complicated to answer. Can a person post a virus to their own blog? Yes, and other people could unknowingly download it. Posting the virus doesn’t “infect” the blog in the sense that it would necessarily be damaged by the posting of the virus, but it doesn’t strike me as an especially good idea. Can other people post viruses to your blog? Not really. Other peoples’ interaction with your blog is farily limited and usually fully configurable by you, the owner. Though the security built into blog software is usually decent, and most people have the odds in their favor (i.e., there are so many blogs out there that a would-be hacker is unlikely to target any given blog), there is a very real risk of hackers defacing or destroying any website or blog.

I hope my answers were helpful. They represent my experience, understanding, and knowledge. Other people would likely answer your questions a little differently.

  • Its like you read my thoughts! You appear to know a lot approximately this, like you wrote the guide in it or something.
I feel that you just could do with some p.c. to pressure the message house a little bit, however other
than that, this is great blog. A fantastic read.
    I’ll certainly be back.

  • Wow, amazing blog layout! How long have you been blogging for?
you made blogging look easy. The overall look of your
site is magnificent, as well as the content!

  • Have you ever considered about adding a little bit more than just your articles?
I mean, what you say is important and everything.
However think of if you added some great visuals or video clips
to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and
video clips, this website could definitely be one of
the greatest in its niche. Great blog!

  • I used to be suggested this web site by my cousin. I
am now not sure whether or not this submit is written by means of him as nobody else know such targeted about
my difficulty. You’re incredible! Thank you!

  • My partner and I stumbled over here from a different website and thought I might as well check things
out. I like what I see so now i’m following you. Look forward to checking out your web page yet again.
